Books on nutrition are many but good books are few. Understanding Nutrition belongs to that minority. The good thing about this edition is that it is quite up-to-date providing useful clinical information in days of tough insurance reimbursement. It has many good illustrations, a well laid-out text for easy readability. The Appendices are choc-a-block of useful facts about the current diet and exchange lists, including food pyramids and such. It also shows you how to calculate your Body Mass Index, the amt of proteins, carbohydrates and fats you need in your diet specifically for your weight. The only downside of the book is the section on vegetarianism. Surely they could have done a better job and included more than four pages! Also it would also have been nice to see more updated information on fad diets such as Atkins or South Beach with respect to health issues.
All said if you are looking for a book that covers the basics of nutrition this is more than a decent resource.
